Can't connect to a Minecraft server: checklist

Work down this list. Most problems are one of the first three.

  1. Is the server online? Check with the server status checker.
  2. Is the address right? Copy it from the server's website. If the address can't be reached, you'll see a message saying so.
  3. Is it the right version? If the server asks for a different version, pick it in the window that appears, or in Server Settings → Server Details. See choosing a version.
  4. Is the proxy working? Try connecting without it. If that works, test the proxy and check its details. Bedrock accounts need a proxy that supports UDP. See Minecraft AFK proxies.
  5. Is the sign-in working? If Microsoft keeps asking you to sign in, use Force refresh sign-in from the account's menu. See Microsoft login fixes.
  6. Is something blocking you?
    • Captcha: some servers ask new players to solve one. If it shows in the dashboard, type the answer.
    • Ban or whitelist: the disconnect message will say so.
    • Too many accounts from one IP: give each account its own proxy.
  7. Still stuck? Post the error message and server address in our Discord.
