Choosing a Minecraft server version

Your accounts need to use a Minecraft version the server accepts. You choose it once per server, and every account in that server folder uses it.

The default#

When you add a server, Latest is selected. Most servers accept it, so you can usually leave it.

Versions you can pick#

  • Latest (1.21.11)
  • 1.21.4
  • 1.21.1
  • 1.20.4
  • 1.20.1
  • 1.19.4
  • 1.8.9

Bedrock accounts don't need a version. It's set for you.

Changing the version#

Open the server folder's menu, choose Server Settings, then Server Details, and pick a new Minecraft version. It applies to every account on that server.

If a server asks for a different version#

If a server turns your account away because of its version, a window shows the server's message and lets you pick another version, then Update & Connect. Auto-reconnect pauses for that account so it doesn't keep retrying with the wrong one.

Not sure which to choose? Look the server up in the server status checker to see its version, or check the server's website.

Frequently asked questions

Start with Latest. If the server asks for another one, pick the closest version from the list.

Sometimes menus look or behave a little differently between versions. If something isn't working, try the version the server recommends.
